How Travel Makes Us Better

I've been grabbed and shaken and not let go by the article 'Why Travel Makes Us Better Designers'. The piece addresses 'threshold moments': the long lines and claustrophobic plane rides, the transitions from one place to another. As the author explains, "Threshold moments are points of profound anticipation—moments when the mere idea of what’s around the bend heightens our focus. They are moments that we take home with us not as souvenirs but as lessons on the richness of life." My on-the-road approach thus far has been to zone out until I arrive at my destination, but I love this idea of travel as an opportunity to stay present at all times.

My good friends Caroline and Jayden of Woodnote Photography are having more than their share of threshold moments. They've been exploring Australia, India, and Nepal, and I've been avidly following their Instagram along the way. Though I haven't been out of the U.S. since I was 18, I have been slowly growing the list of American cities I've seen. And I return from each visit with a renewed energy, one that's grounded both in the vibrance of the wider world and the santuary of my own little corner in it.

Even an afternoon in another neighborhood yields threshold moments. My favorite lamp comes from a store that I spotted while sitting in a traffic jam; the most fascinating local characters I meet are cab drivers; and anyone who's frequented public transit knows what an adventure that can be. I look forward to approaching future travel with a more attentive mindset—so that when I return home, my stories, souvenirs, and indeed life as a whole, are that much the richer.

  1. its always those moments on the way to your “destination” that are really special. thank you for reminding me to take better note of them.

  2. I love traveling. When I’m packing, I always have the opportunity to decide what is and is not important enough to bring. I love being able to trim down all the things I need, the excitement of a different place, and the prospect of seeing friends and family if they’re coming with. There’s always a little rush: here I go, just me and some clothes!

  3. I love this post. I just took a road trip with my best girl friend to visit her sister in Nashville. We had the best time. Eating, drinking and dancing our way through Nashville. It was good for the soul.
p.s. Where is the rug from? I’m in the market for one. Thank you! xo.
