Key Piece for Spring: The Leather Skirt

Best leather skirts

Oh boy! I'm super excited about this post. It's taken me a solid two weeks to assemble, because it addresses a topic that has always mystified me, and I wanted to give it the attention it deserves. InStyle lists the leather skirt as one of their five key pieces for spring. And while I have indeed seen it popping up everywhere—often worn with great success—I myself am terrified of the high risqué factor of this little number. I mean two words, people: Pretty Woman.

How to wear a leather skirt

So the question is, how do you wear the leather skirt in a way that is at once stylish yet modest? And of course I'm not talking prudish. I'm no shrinking violet. I just don't want to receive unwelcome invitations while strolling down the main drag. A few pro tips come to mind. (NO! Not that kind of pro!) First think about the skirt itself. Look for a fit that isn't super tight. Featherlight leathers, A-line shapes, paperbag waists, and moto details like zippers are a bonus.

Then style it any way that doesn't involve fishnets and sky-high heels. An oxford shirt? A raglan football hoodie? Yes! Your best cashmere cardigan and ballet flats? Go for it. Your mantra should be 'What Wouldn't Heidi Fleiss Do'. But at the same time, have fun! Let those legs out! Shake what your mama gave you! Remember that the leather skirt is about balance and you'll be just fine.

  1. I’m digging all the ones you featured that have zippers. I’m not ready to wear them yet, but I appreciate them from afar.
