Spring Roses In Bloom

Rose garden

I have a new love in my life. One that I never expected. One that, in fact, I previously shunned. But with time comes an opening of the heart, a softening of the soul, and apparently an appreciation of the slow, stately traditions that elude the frenetic idealism of youth. Or perhaps I'm just highly suggestible, because lately, everywhere I look I see roses. And I've fallen head over heels for them.

Roses

It's easy to be biased against roses. Most of us have no experience with them beyond the obligatory red dozen on Valentine's Day, presented in a shroud of crackling plastic and bristling baby's breath. But the roses here in this, my first Southern California spring, are not those stoic hothouse stems. No, these roses grow wild along fences and roadsides, around mailboxes and dumpsters, in great clusters that threaten to consume any who stand in their way. Their blossoms range from blush-tinged white to flaming orange. Their thick, waxy leaves command the same attention as their delicate petals.

Florals

With roses everywhere outdoors, it's blessedly easy to invite them inside. An entryway bouquet greets me. A single bathroom blossom keeps me company as I brush my teeth. I have received thorns in the thumb from my newfound friends, but I don't mind this one character flaw. Indeed so often I have asked others to overlook my sometimes prickly disposition in the face of my more positive traits. So is this the wisdom of age? Perhaps. All I know is that it's only a matter of time before we find me puttering in a rose garden of my own.

P.S. My recent obsession with roses really does make me want roses on everything. A few favorite rose items: 1. Diptyque L'eau Rose 2. Mossimo Supply Co. Roses Floral Denim Jacket 3. Uniqlo Cabbages & Roses Tote 4. John Derian Rose Cake Stand Images: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5

  2. such a beautiful post — roses have always & forever been my very favourite — their romance eclipses that of any other flower and there are so many different and astonishingly lovely varieties and colours . . .

  3. I feel the same way, some people just refuse to see that roses are so much more that what you get for valentine. I love love love roses!
