Book Review + Giveaway: Furniture Makeovers

Furniture Makeovers Book

Wanna know a secret? I've found the most treasured pieces in my home not at a store but at a flea market, garage sale, or even on the curb! More often than not, they've needed a little spit and polish before I could let them shine. So now I'm bookmarking almost every project in my copy of Furniture Makeovers, a fabulous how-to volume for everything from sanding to decoupage and beyond!

Furniture makeovers book review

Written by Barb Blair of Knack Studios—an awesome source for found and reclaimed interiors inspiration—Furniture Makeovers contains the ideal mix of pretty and practical between its covers. The pages demand to be dogeared, the projects done with enthusiasm. Yesterday the girls at A Beautiful Mess tried out one of the book's easy floral decor ideas, and I'm dying to test out my ombre painting skills ASAP. A stroll to see what my neighbors have left on the curb is clearly in order!

Giveaway alert! One lucky reader will win a copy of Furniture Makeovers as well as a Knack Studios tote bag! 1. I have a headboard I picked up for $10 in the As-Is at Ikea that I made over & made taller a few years ago that definitely needs a makeover update. Hmm, you’ve got my brain percolating with ideas now.

  2. I LOVE THIS BOOK! The step by step directions are among the best I’ve seen. I have a dresser upstairs that is just calling for me to make her pretty.

  3. Oh I’ve been dying to read this book! I need to makeover both of my bathroom vanities.

  4. As a grad student I have a lot of ikea/target readmade furniture. Until I can afford the real deal, I bet I have a bookcase and a dresser that would look a lot better (and more me) with a coat of paint or some other clever update.

  5. I have a pair of end tables that badly need an update. I would love some guidance so as not to ruin the beautiful pieces. Thanks!

  6. I have a glass door tall cabinet that I want to makeover to hold my daughter’s shoes.

  7. I have a dresser and nightstand in dire need of a makeover so I will be keeping my fingers crossed.

  8. I’ve got an old sewing machine table (with the sewing machine still inside) that’s the ugliest shade of old, dry, sad wood. And…it’s the first thing you see when you walk in my apartment. It DESPERATELY needs a makeover!

  9. 2 kitchen chairs need my attention , so painting is in my future! Would love to be the winner

  10. I was just looking through this fabulous book on Amazon and then I found Barb’s blog and that sent me here.
I have a low 3 drawer waterfall dresser made in the 30’s I believe that I just picked up for $30! It’s a bit beat with loose veneere, broken pulls, and warped drawer bottoms.

  11. I’ve actually just been scheming how to turn a fun, modern, wiry accent table I have into a little seat. I can always use more home makeover inspiration and advice, so this book would be perfect and much appreciated!

  12. Oooh I love a good home decor DIY! This book would be right up my ally as I finally get comfy in my new (not really new but I am finally unpacking after 10 months) nest! I would love to make over the two wooden cases that hold up my glass desk + the seat of a little vintage chair I scored at the Good Will a few months back.

  13. I have an 80s oak coffe table that is crying out for a makeover!

  14. We have built in bookcases with doors on the bottom that are oak with a gosh awful pecan finish. I gag everytime I look at them. DH however beleives it is a crime/sin to paint wood so this book might give him inspiration (we also have that dark stained oak ranch molding outlining every door and window) fortunately with that however -we are replacing every window in the house and have to remove the interior moldings. I have a feel that most of that trim will breal or split when I remove it

  15. My couch would love a makeover. It’s a hand me down from my parents and could stay with me much longer with a little TLC

  16. College student furniture could always use a little love especially when a group of gals all bring their mismatched collection into one apartment. Finding a clever way to make all of our pieces cohesive will certainly be a fun challenge!

  17. My kitchen stools were once painted a fresh, Crayola Crayon Sailboat Blue. They need refreshing…this time with some clever additional protection/covering(?) for where people put their feet.

  18. My dining room table:) it’s a trestle table from goodwill that I started to paint… Aqua! It’s horrible, but so pretty I can’t give up on it:(

  19. Either my IKEA dining room table or a dresser in my bedroom.

  20. I’m about to move into my first proper home after years of sharing. My parents, having recently moved, are donating a large number of pieces to help us get started – so the question is more appropriately, what haven’t we got to give a new lease of life too?! The one that really needs help is a lovely dressing table that got a ‘paint treatment’ in circa 1997, and is cream with blue showing through it and gold highlights. It actually looked nice in the room it was in before…but something tells me a fresh look would be a good move!

  21. My headboard could definitely use a makeover. It is worn down and the paint is rubbing off. Thanks for this great giveaway!

  22. My work desk could do with a make over. Was a nice mahogany brown, now just full of scratches and ink marks and, due to quick fixing by the other half, handles on drawers that don’t match.

  23. My house is full of thrifted, picked, and hand me downs! I would love to give my 40’s desk a makeover and this lovely book would be just the ticket to getting me to do it! Thanks Anne!

  24. Our little nursery/toy corner in our bedroom. It’s almost there but just not quite.

  25. I would love to redo my bedroom dresser that is a hand me down from my husband’s grandmother.

  26. That very first image in your post got my gears turning on an old, hand-me-down dresser my husband and I have been using and moving for years (even though it’s pretty sad looking). Gears are a-turning!

  27. I’ve got an old pine dresser just longing for an update! This book looks fantastic 🙂

  28. Does my whole living room count? I have a coffee table in need of a makeover brainstorming session 🙂

  29. Fantastic!
I’d say either my computer desk or dresser. My dad made both and they’re gorgeous pieces of furniture, but a little outdated. Think oiled pine and rounded wooden knobs. I love them but something needs to be done.

  30. I have a giant secretary that is always front and center in my home and needs some serious attention. I’ve loved this book from afar for a while now.

  31. I am inheriting a very sad and very old dresser & bookcase set when I move in with my boyfriend next month. We could definitely use the book inspiration as we embark on a full home makeover! I’m sure there will be many Craigslist finds in my future!

  32. My kitchen table definitely needs a makeover. Thanks for the giveaway!

  33. Would love to makeover an old accent table for an apt.

  34. My dresser could really use a makeover! Thanks! 🙂

  35. I have a door from a cabinet that was in my great-grandmother’s house. It has come apart and I would like to find out how to restore it and display it.
    Thanks!

  36. I have a cute little mid-century chair that could use a makeover.

  37. I would love to revamp my Great Grandfathers ‘victorian era’ desk..
    What a wonderful book!
