Fall Style Essential: Buffalo Plaid

Buffalo plaid style

I've never thought of myself as a plaid kinda girl. But this week I did a round-up of Buffalo plaid decor over at Lamps Plus, and ever since I've been jonesing for some of this classic Americana pattern in my wardrobe. There's something about it that feels so versatile! Maybe it's 'cause everyone from woodsmen to prepsters have adopted it over the years, or maybe it's just 'cause I have a soft spot for a splash of red in any context. Whatever the reason, I'm officially on the hunt for my perfect plaid piece.

Fortunately, Buffalo check is having a high fashion moment, so there's plenty of it to choose from right now! Worn simply with jeans and a tee it feels rustic and ready for fall; paired with other prints it projects an avant-garde cool reminiscent of 90's Drew Barrymore. And then there's the plaid at Fashion Week effect, a stylistic stretch so grand that a tartan rookie such as myself simply stares in awe.

Of course we needn't swath ourselves in Buffalo check. If a lumberjack coat isn't your thing, a cap or gloves will do just fine. Mix in other materials—a black leather jacket, a silk skirt—for a look that's both unexpected and eyecatching. I've been scouring Etsy and eBay for good vintage options with no luck yet, but I did happen upon Ryan Gosling rocking Buffalo plaid. Now I'm more obsessed than ever!
