How To Wear a Tunic Dress

Tunic dress and blazer

Think of this not as outfit post but as a two part public service announcement. First of all, have you watched Peaky Blinders on Netflix? If the answer is no, you gotta get on it. Not only are the plot and characters utterly addictive, but the costume design will enamor you with its tailored, textured minimalism. Think tweeds overcoats and drop-waist shifts, turbans and slim ankle boots. Basically the original iteration of so many looks being sent down the runway today.

Grey minimalist style

The second part of this PSA is an advocacy pitch on behalf the tunic dress. If you, like me, prefer pajamas above all other apparel—and indeed feel a slight resentment when you have to wear real clothes for the sake of public decency—then the tunic dress is your new best friend. It's the closest you can wear to your favorite oversized sleep shirt while still being taken for someone who knows a thing or two about fashion. Shapeless becomes avant-garde. Dowdy becomes daring. All while disguising the burrito baby you've been gestating since lunch.

Knit turban

Of course I do recommend a few strategic accessories to keep the frump factor in check. A draped jacket echoes the boxiness of the dress, but its careful draping and tapered sleeves add subtle shape. Meanwhile, a dainty bag and slim, serviceable shoes provide a welcome counterpoint to the outfit's volume. And finally, for a nod to Peaky Blinders, a knit turban tops everything off. The only thing missing is Cillian Murphy on my arm…
