Hello, my name is Anne, I'm a pattern phobe. There are exceptions, of course. In my closet and around the house, I hoard stripes like it's my job. When I'm feeling daring, I'll do polka dots. Yet those two prints share a clean, minimalist quality that makes them function like neutrals. When it comes to truly dynamic patterns—florals and abstracts, for instance—I run for the safety of solids.
However, a crop of tropical-inspired clothing and decor has lately been sprouting up and I kinda sorta maybe think I like it. Is it wild? Yes. Bold and daring? Yes and yes. But unrestrained? Nope, these prints take their inspiration from leaves rather than flowers for a graphic presence that is clean, sophisticated, and versatile. Better still, they often appear in shades of black, white, and desaturated green—convenient since we pattern phobes are often color averse too.
Of course these tropical prints are quite a departure from my usual stripes or spots, so I'm on the lookout for small, inexpensive ways to dip my toes in this trend. A fast-fashion tee or backpack offer a low-investment taste of tropical. Around the house, dish towels, throw pillows, or ceramic doodads add panache. Two tiny palms wave from the label of the best smelling scented candle I've whiffed in a while. And for the quickest, easiest get-the-look of all, a single philodendron leaf in a narrow glass vase will do the trick just fine!
