Natural Sun Protection for Summer Skincare

Summer inspiration

For years I've been setting the goal of wearing sunscreen on my face every day, and I'm pleased to say that I'm finally doing it! Of course, it took the appearance of fine lines around my eyes and across my forehead to propel me into the habit—but better late than never, right? One of the biggest reasons for my reluctance thus far has been the dearth of suncare products that suit my sensitive skin. If I had a dollar for every sunscreen sample I've brought home from Sephora in hopes that it would be the magic formula, I'd be able to start my own sunscreen company! But alas, defects ranging from putrid scents to greasy finishes ruled out each and every one.

At last, however, the market has caught up with my (admittedly particular) demands! The above suncare regime has been keeping me pale as a vampire with none of the usual breakouts and irritation. My daily under-makeup sun protection is Kerstin Florian's lightweight lotion, which uses a chemical screen but leaves behind only a faint floral aroma. If I know I'm going to be outside longer, I'll go for Block Island Organics' fantastic mineral-based sunscreen; it sinks right into skin with no chalky residue or streaking when you sweat! Eminence makes a translucent powder sunscreen that's perfect for midday touchups, while NARS Dual-Intensity Blush provides a customizable bronze that looks natural, not muddy. Finally, if even your best efforts don't prevent a burn, hydrating toner and healing rose serum heal damage fast.

  1. I’ve seen that powdered sunscreen…what an awesome invention! Because who wants to reapply when you’ve already got make-up on?

  2. Also worth trying: the Rose + Neem facial sunscreen from Pratima. I’ve been using it for years and love it! xo
