A Modern Backyard Makeover with Move Loot

For my entire adult live, I’ve lived in apartments…until now, that is! Not long ago I moved in with my boyfriend, and we currently share a tiny craftsman bungalow in LA’s Highland Park neighborhood. For the first time since leaving my parents’ house I have freedom from noisy neighbors, my own washer and dryer, and—wonder of wonders—a yard completely to myself!

But of course, having a yard and using it are two totally different things. Until recently my focus has been on getting my interior design sorted out, and it’s meant that the yard has gone largely neglected. However, with summer quickly slipping away, I’ve wanted to enjoy at least a few twilight dinners under the stars. So when Move Loot reached out and asked me to style a space in my home using their curated selection of second-hand furniture, I jumped at the chance to do a little modern backyard makeover!

Move Loot is new to LA and New York, though they’ve been killing it in San Francisco for a while. Their mission is to take the hassle out of buying and selling secondhand furniture. For sellers, the process is a dream. Simply upload photos of your no-longer-needed pieces to Move Loot, then once they’re approved for sale a team of professional movers picks them up and Move Loot takes care of the rest! No scam inquiries, no shady or flakey buyers, just money in your pocket and the satisfaction of seeing your stuff go to a good home. And if you’re in the market for quality pre-loved furniture, shop the Move Loot site for your city and the same team of friendly pro movers delivers it to your door. Gone are the days of trekking across town to discover that sweet midcentury sofa was snagged from under your nose!

As for my own space, the design process was a total no-brainer. I picked up on the simple lines of my home’s Craftsman exterior and complemented them with a teak dining set, sofa, and chairs. A long, low bench serves as a coffee table that I decorated with potted plants and ceramics for a laid-back urban oasis vibe. Cushions from Local + Lejos up the comfort quotient, while hanging baskets and an outdoor rug from my friends at Taylor + Taylor add pattern and personality. I’ve enjoyed more than a few relaxing moments out here in the last couple weeks!

And don’t be surprised if you start looking around your pad for those items you’ve been wanting to offload but haven’t had time or energy to do yourself. Move Loot is a total game changer—and a welcome one at that!

  1. It looks so great, Anne! I love all those little planters. And Move Loot needs to get to Texas. Sounds like an excellent service. Way less shady than craigslist can be, haha.
