Photo Collage: Feeling Nostalgic

Housebound. Two days of non-stop rain. I've been wallowing in photos from the nascent days of Rue: when everything seemed like a grand adventure, when climbing into a tub to get the perfect shot was a novelty, when everyone we met was a new friend, when stumbling across a vintage car while wearing tutus meant of course we'd pose like ballerinas. When we didn't think twice about wearing tutus.

Now. You guys, I'm tired. I still have moments of grand adventure, but they're outnumbered by the daily grind. Friends from the first months have moved, had babies, grown up. I've grown a lot too. Discovered strengths (and weaknesses) I didn't know I had. But I'm a Taurus–resistant to change. I don't feel grown up, I just feel old. And some days I simply want my tutu back.

Tell me: What were your tutu times? Do you long for them? Wallow with me! Photos: Me and Bri on the couch by Bri's boyfriend Arian Soheili. The Elvis shoot crew by Feather Love Photography. Halloween fun, Smilebooth. All others, random snaps.

  1. Aww, girl you’ve still got your “tutu” I just know it. I’m a Taurus too and we are so nostalgic. Smile beauty, you’ve got spunk and talent.

  2. Aw, I love this post – and you are STILL as fresh-faced and young/beautiful as ever, Anne 🙂 And Rue is only getting BETTER. But I know how you feel…I’m usually exhausted, jaded and feeling decrepit by the time I get home…and filled with worry that life is passing me by too quickly. Come to Seattle and see me! I’ll force my Gemini ways on you…we haaate feeling static. The future is waiting, and it’s filled with many more amazing things for you! Sending hugs. 🙂

  3. I have had several “tutu times” usually when something is brand new and I have my NEW! EXCITING! blinders on. Nothing is too much work, nothing is more important than the new project. That is unsustainable for the long haul, but it sure is fun while it lasts.
It’s kind of like relationships. Everyone wants to be half of a cute old couple, who have a lifetime of memories and laughter together. Those marriages started with the NEW! EXCITING! crush and progress from there. Our careers are the same way, we have to progress beyond the crush to get to the sustainable and fulfilling. It can be hard along the way.
I know there will be more “tutu times” for you. Probably sooner than you think.

  4. you guys look like you have so much fun! I’m sure you just need a little fun break to recharge and reconnect with your peeps.
Sheesh, my last “tutu times” of any kind were probably high school…yikes…

  5. My tutu time was back before my hubby and I had our cute little girl, Sadie (your biggest 3 yr old fan), and even before we were married. We lived in an awful place, Castroville, where the sun doesn’t shine 360 days of the year. And we used to drive up to the city to see rock shows at divey bars, and then afterwards, instead of driving home, we would drive over to the Legion of Honor museum and park in the parking lot behind it, climb into the back of the station wagon and pass out until morning. It was all so rock n’ roll.
Sometimes we would drive to Portland and all the way to Seattle. Sleep on the ground because we have no tent. Wake up to the silhouette of a raccoon peering down. Wander down to the sea. Sneak into a baseball game for free.
No blogging, no facebook, no portfolio building, no networking. No nap-times, no time-outs, no whining.
Just listening to music, taking pics, hanging out together with no prospects, poor and happy.
Honey, I feel ya. These last few days have been hard. Big time.

  6. So fun…My tutu, has long been put away. Although, I could go home to my family’s
garret and I am sure I could find it. I truly, have never seen a group of such talented
and FUN people. Your pics made us all smile and look about our friends. ox, m

  7. Aw…just a little break but a real break is what you need and then the fresh eyes and thoughts will be right there. I know how you feel. My antidote is a getaway, a real one, sans devices. Somewhere Bora-Bora-esque 🙂
Last tutu moment? 2009 when I traveled the world for inspiration and pretty much took the work on the road.
Now it is grown up time, like you said. The rain does not help either.
Feel better, those photos are great, the magazine is great and your blog posts are always like the perfect biscotti to a cappuccino!

  8. Keep that fire spirit alive! Each decade, each year, each moment provides us with a different opportunity to shine. It might not be tutu wearing…but it will be another way to let loose and live life to the fullest. We grow, we age, but we are the same people with the same heart and soul. Keep that passion alive!!

  9. Anne, i love it! i have never even met any of you but i feel like i know you all, and especially you for some reason:) thanks for being so open and honest the entire way through your journey and for this post. savor this melancholy while it lasts and keep your head up! you’re going to move mountains! xoxo, Alicia

  10. Oh yes. I look back at days when I was younger too, but lately as highschool graduation looms nearer and nearer I think of how it’s all going to change. It’s sort of a melancholy thought.

  11. I still tell my friends that I want a tutu to wear around the house! Haha, I don’t feel like there’s anything wrong with wanted to feel like a little kid sometimes.

  12. I can TOTALLY relate. Matt’s at SXSW this week, so I’ve been spending a few days at my parents’ house. Naturally, I’ve been going through old photo albums, and rummaging through my old stuff in my old room. It’s definitely weird to think how quickly time flies these days, and just how OLD I feel. There are definitely days when I wish I could rewind a few years..If only for just one day.

  13. What great photos! It is always nice to look back at the fun times and remember those moments with the biggest smile on our faces!

  14. so weird, i’m having a “i feel old and can’t find my tutu” week too. hmmm, and i too am a taurus. your tutu is still lurking, so is mine. treat yourself sweetly this weekend, your fresh face and energy will be back up soon. mine too 😉

  15. Your blog is very beautiful, the style is very cool! See the things that I think is very interested in oh, thank you for sharing! I wish you good luck!
