Fall Style Essential: The Wide-Brimmed Hat

Fall hat style

Hats are a funny business. They're one of those accessories that I see other women wearing and think to myself, 'Gotta get me one!' I then launch a fullscale search on every store in the tri county area to find my perfect hat, all to no avail. An ill fit, a brim that makes my cheeks look too chipmunkesque, or a host of other undefinable flaws always prevent me from pulling the trigger. It leaves me wondering: Are some of us 'hat people' and some of us just…not?

But this fall? I'm going to get my hands on a wide-brimmed hat that suits my (admittedly neurotic) tastes. Because holy fedora, Batman. These girls look so cool. Poised and put together yet so casual and breezy too. Plus there's nothing like a hat to project an air of confidence that suggests you're ready for whatever life sends your way—barring a strong gust of wind, of course.

Fall fedoras

I'm going to look for details like grosgrain or leather bands, contrast trims, and unexpected colors such as navy or plum. I don't want to spend too much because hats sometimes wander off like they have a mind of their own—or I'm just careless—but I also know I might have to invest a wee bit to get just the right one. And I'm close; I can feel it like a hunter senses his prey. I'm just one jaunty angle away from being a hat person!

  1. I want to thank you for this post, Anne, because I whole heartedly agree. Some people can wear hats better than others, but I also believe there is a hat for everyone. I personally can’t wear fedoras. I have an extremely large head, which is a problem in the hat department, but last year I found a floppy wool hat that I adore at H&M. It’s a great hat at a great price! Happy hat hunting!

  2. I felt the same way when I started seeing these pop up on blogs and pinterest. I searched all over and eventually I found an awesome one at Target that I am just loving for only like $16! I don’t think they have them online anymore but they were still in stores.

  3. I want! But I’m having a hard time deciding what hat works with my new boy-cut ‘do. Lots of trying on to do.

  4. yeah i agree – hats just don’t look good on me no matter how many I try on. I gotta agree with Leah – I found the best hat at Target. Don’t be fooled by all these people wearing a $500 rag and bone hat and then instagram it. Target really has the best one that is affordable.
