Hot and Cold Interiors Inspiration

I've just arrived back in San Francisco after a five days' holiday jaunt to Canada. And while it's lovely to be home–can't wait to snuggle my cats!–I was struck by the cold, stark beauty of the north as my cab made its way through the icy streets to the airport. There's something to be said for the Nordic landscape, for shades of midnight and marble that alternately absorb and reflect the winter sun.

So I'm especially intrigued right now by interiors that capture this same sensibility of chilly surfaces like concrete and glass, and then counter it with layered textiles, rugs and throws. The effect is an intriguing one, and it leaves me wondering: how would I feel in a space like this? Would I want to hibernate? Crank the thermostat and shiver 'til spring?

Or would those floor-to-ceiling windows act like a greenhouse, with me the unsuspecting orchid? Maybe I would flourish in the bright and dynamic light of these spaces and unexpectedly find the winter months my most productive of all? How lovely that would be, and if so, maybe we should all decamp to a house like this until April…Thoughts, anyone?

  1. well as i sit in a little cottage on cape cod in very cold temps right now, i ponder the same thing. every now and then i consider moving somewhere warm to escape the long winter but then every now and then i feel that the change of the seasons is part of me, having grown up in new england, i would miss it!

  2. Those images, just… Wow. Especially obsessed with the living room and library. I’ve got the long winter here in Chicago, so now I guess I just need a new house?

  3. love to look at these rooms, living in them is another story however. i prefer a warm and italian sunny lit home to LIVE in. loved this addition of ELLE.

  4. I find these photos very beautiful but I don’t find them welcoming or warm. A Canadian winter would be far too long if I were surrounded in concrete. I prefer the warmth of wood.

  5. Te he conocido por casualidad y tu post de hoy me parece maravilloso, el contraste frío del hormigón con las cálidas mantas de pelo y el uso exquisito del color dan como resultado una casa fantástica. Saludos.

  6. I am in love with the chairs in the bottom two pictures. Especially the lounge. Stunning. Happy New Year!

  7. anne! have a healthy and happy new year! i can’t wait for a fresh new year to start, i think amazing things are going to happen, 😉 enjoy your weekend!!

  8. These interiors look just stunning! I really like the chilly atmosphere.
Our Finnish designer, Ilmari Tapiovaara has designed quite the same chairs like there is in the picture in the collage 🙂 Those chairs are called “mademoiselle chairs”.
Good New Year to you 🙂

  9. You should be starting to remodel the house by now. Undoubtedly, you wouldn’t want to make the days faster and just enjoy the long year. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t be bad at all to make a summer interior in advance. That way, you can fully enjoy the summer experience inside the house and enjoy the breeze of winter outside. Isn’t it great to enjoy the best of both worlds?

  10. mean I just read through the entire article of yours and it was quite good but since I’m more of a visual learner,I found that to be more helpful.
