Object Lust: Wood Cutting Boards

Serving boards

It is at once curious but not suprising that the humblest of objects inspire the greatest loyalty. After all, what is more likely to win our hearts than years of unassuming service, understated appeal, and endless versatility? A great supporting actor's career has more staying power than a flash-in-the-pan star, and a simple, well-made tool can bring joy to generations of chefs.

Hence my soft spot for wood cutting boards. My parents have been making nicks in the same one since before I was born, and my grandparents have been prepping meals on theirs since my dad was a kid. My mom uses hers for everything from serving cheese at parties to bringing bread to the table at Thanksgiving, dicing veggies for salads and slicing the meat my dad so masterfully grills. It's not just a kitchen essential, it's a family heirloom.

I've been slowly building a collection of my own. My maple Boos Block sees the most action, while my Alaskan ulu knife and chopping bowl set has my heart. Next up I've got my eyes on a handsome live edge walnut board next—something petite with a solid presence to turn my morning coffee and toast into a veritable restaurant moment!
