I've had a crush on Vrai & Oro for a while. Since last Spring the label has taken the approach of brands like Everlane and Warby Parker (decrease overhead, cut out the middleman, deliver designer quality at a fraction of the cost) and applied it to fine jewelry. I pretty quickly chose the word 'acceptance' as it's been a mantra for me lately. In fact, it's become the antidote to my often crippling perfectionism. Packed into this single word is a reminder to embrace others exactly as they are, rather than to judge and criticize. To love myself, warts and all, rather than agonize over my perceived shortcomings.
But acceptance doesn't mean throwing in the towel; in fact it's the key to personal evolution. Acceptance demands that we stay and work with the moment, rather than long for an alternate past or a nebulous future. As philosopher William James put it: "Be willing to have it so. Acceptance of what has happened is the first step to overcoming the consequences of any misfortune." In order to enact lasting change, we must open our eyes in an honest appraisal of our responsibilities—and open our hearts in a wholesale embrace of any possibility. In this way, acceptance is power. Acceptance is presence. Acceptance is peace. I haven't taken this necklace off since I received it, and I'm so grateful for its constant gentle reminder of my truth.
