Easter Flowers + A Hand-Tied Bouquet Tutorial

Spring bouquet easter DIY

I always love gathering friends for a meal, but something about spring get-togethers feels especially enticing. Setting a welcoming table feels extra doable this time of year, perhaps because Mother Nature lays the groundwork with flowers everywhere we turn! To harness spring's bounty, the lovely Jess of Taylor + Taylor made this easy yet impressive arrangement from the season's prettiest blooms—and provided a helpful hand-tied bouquet tutorial for filling your vases year 'round. Whether you're hosting Easter, Passover, or a just-because brunch, there's no better time to practice your floral skills!

Jess points out that every floral artist has a preferred style, and that the most effective way to hone yours is to dive in, play around, and get a feel for what works best for you. But she also suggests general guidelines for your own version of this wild and loose arrangement. Anchor the bouquet by laying the tallest and strongest stems (here, larkspur and snow on the mountain) in the palm of your hands. Next add the flowers that will form the outer boundaries of the bouquet, in this case the droopy lilac that drapes over the edge of the vase. Then come tulips and ranunculus for personality and color; distribute these evenly throughout the foundation you laid with the anchor and secondary stems. Finally, a few daffodil accents add a spunky finishing touch.

Once the bouquet has come together more or less to your liking, hold it vertically against your chosen container to measure the length you want the stems. Trim them so they're even at the bottom, then slide your bouquet into the vase. Don't be afraid to fiddle with it some more, moving or adding blossoms where you see holes, want more color, or need to create balance. Once you've got the basic steps down you can try new flower pairings, monochromatic effects, and bouquets of varying sizes. Flowers are such a safe and satisfying creative outlet. After all, it's impossible to make them look bad!
