I get quite a lot of comments on my last name. It's not a common one, and moreover, it lends itself to a good number of puns—a good or bad thing, depending on what company you're in! I'm careful not to play that card too much, but one thing I'll never turn down is an opportunity to align myself with the savory flavor of sage. So when the folks at VEEV reached out with a custom cocktail recipe featuring the herb's fragrant appeal, I replied with a resounding, 'Cheers to that!'
Not only does this cocktail highlight the astringent warmth of sage, it also incorporates the stunning citrus in season. When I shopped for this shoot I got utterly swept up in all the choices out there! My local market had no fewer than seven citrus options, ranging from perky kumquats and chubby tangelos to moody blood oranges and sassy tangerines. The best thing about this citrus cocktail recipe is that you can use your favorite fruit or mix in a few. Because why discriminate?
The unlikely but utterly addictive pairing of citrus and sage in this beverage will blow you away! The bright, barely sweet quality of the fruit plays so nicely with the herbal depth of the sage. And the acai-based VEEV offers a smooth and subtle counterpoint to the tang of the other ingredients. Mix one up for your next cocktail hour and perhaps raise a toast in the name of sage!
2 oz VEEV
3/4 oz simple syrup
3/4 oz fresh lime
4 sage leaves
1 tangerine, 4 kumquats, or any roughly equivalent mix of citrus
Add leaves and fruit to cocktail shaker and muddle, then add remainder of ingredients and shake with ice. Strain over fresh ice in rocks glass. Garnish with sprig of sage.
