As a card-carrying history nerd, I’m fascinated by trends and how they begin. Some we can trace to distinct origins—like that time back in 1660 when Catherine de Medici decided that the fork was the must-have utensil of the season. (Aside: If Instagram had existed back then, would the #forkie have been a thing?) But most trends arise seemingly out of to inundate our social media feeds. Take the turtleneck sweater tuck, for example. Suddenly, in 2016, that obnoxious habit a turtleneck has of trapping your hair is not a look to be avoided but rather a style statement unto itself.
And what does that statement say? It sends a message of casual ease, of laissez-faire style. It speaks of a confidence in the quality of one’s knitwear and the cuteness of one’s curls, such that a collision of the two can only add to their individual appeal. But most of all, the Turtleneck Tuck shouts, “Yes, I woke up like this, and I’m fabulous!” So the next time your locks get caught in your sweater, leave them there in their limp, staticky, winter hair glory and find the nearest street style photographer. Because you’re ready for your close-up, my friend.
