In my continually ongoing effort not to resort to cutoffs and tees every darn day, I’m always on the hunt for new ways to wear the pieces I already own. There’s no deeper well for fresh fashion ideas than Instagram, but the trick of course is to follow stylish snappers whose sensibility matches your own. If you scroll through someone’s feed and your immediate reaction is “Where does she live and how fast can I get there to steal her wardrobe”, then you’ve hit inspiration pay dirt. Lately I’m cribbing notes on summer outfit ideas from these two ladies—and thankfully for them they’re both a long plane ride away so their closets are safe from me. For now.
I’ve got massive respect for anyone who can pull off the baggy shirt and wide-leg trouser combo without looking like she’s borrowed a giant’s clothes. Nashville’s Mary Ellen Skye is a master of oversized comfy dressing, and she’s full of clever tips like layering a blouse on top of a jumpsuit to get extra wear from the latter. Her floppy hat game is also strong, plus she’s got an eye for subtle color that ranges from apparel and accessories to the lovely interiors and lifestyle shots she also posts.
Across the pond in London, Amanda Start of Online Stylist has a shoe collection that would turn Imelda Marcos green with envy. She never met a crisp white shirt she couldn’t love, and she shares her endless ideas for styling them with everything from classic jeans to gauzy maxis. Amanda’s palette runs towards black, white, and camel, both in her outfits and in the scenes she posts from her travels in England and beyond. She’s got me planning a white dress/black jacket/black sneaks combo for today, in fact—just as soon a I roll out of bed and shed the food-stained cat tee I’m currently rocking!
I love Mary Ellen! But Amanda’s feed in new to me. Thanks for sharing the inspiration!
