Here in the States it's Memorial Day weekend, also known as the unofficial first weekend of summer! Across the land, watermelons are being chilled, barbecues fired up, picnic baskets unearthed from storage. With the arrival of our most laid-back season comes the requisite laid-back style: cutoffs, sundresses, and my personal fave, stripes!
Of course the perennial appeal of stripes doesn't limit them to summer, but something about the pattern feels especially suited to beach outings, breezy afternoons, and long, lazy gatherings with friends. They embody everything we love about summer, including a crisp and casual sense of fun. The dynamic energy of stripes is like an invitation to let a little sunshine in!
This summer's iteration of stripes feels especially fresh. Pencil, pinstripe, and variegated patterns offer a lighthearted twist on the usual striped suspects. Look for pool coverups and swingy skirts for playful style, and around the home try striped linen throws or upholstery in shades of charcoal and ecru. And you can't go wrong with a pair of striped espadrilles—a summer icon if ever there was one!
P.S. A reader reminded me of the true meaning of Memorial Day, taking time to honor those who have given their lives in service. My apologies for neglecting to mention that in the first iteration of this post! Shopping Guide: 1. Striped Lemlem Shirt 2. Striped Midi Skirt 3. Striped Throw 4. Pinstriped Chair 5. Thanks Anne Sage! As I head into my 40s (my dotage?), I’m finding it hard to keep track of trends, but thanks to your elegant blog, I don’t have to fall completely behind.
I want everything pictured here. Everything!
Love this look! I love how breezy and casual it is. Totally obsessing over the dress in the first picture.
And some people are actually remembering family members who died serving their country.
