Photos of Old New York from Archivast

Old NYC photos

Today is a somber one here in the States, as conversations of 'Where were you when…?' reverberate across the country. And while the events of 9/11 evoke much sadness and reflection, they also remind us of the eternal resilience of the place that witnessed so much of the day's tragedies: New York. I for one am fascinated by the city's history, with its architecture and evolutions, with how it has not just survived but thrived through centuries to become one of the most iconic locations in the world.

NYC in black + white

This morning I spent some time browsing the images at Archivast—a site that unearths photographic gems and makes them available as fine art—and I was awestruck by how New York continually evolves yet has a timeless quality as well. The city teems with movement yet shelters pockets of stillness and reverence; it simaltaneously humbles inspires with its size, its nonstop activity, and its ever-charged potential. On this and all days, New York is a testament to the power of our collective ability to pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off, and push into every greater heights.

  1. This post is beautiful and thank you for taking the moment to share it. I spend to NYC this coming week to see some of my dearest friends and one of my favorite cities in the world and yesterday is one that leaves all of us in the US (and around the world) in a moment of silence and reflection.
But, NYC is truly an amazing city that has the strength to make it through anything, the heart to hold anyone, and the desire to be continually learning and evolving.
