I like to joke that LA is the only city in which someone can say they're juicing and not mean they're on steroids. But the truth is, it's not just a Southern California thing anymore. These days everyone seems to be jumping on the juice bandwagon! And with good reason too. Juices, when prepared to maximize taste and nutritional benefits, have a seemingly magical ability to make you feel like you can jump a tall building in a single bound.
I'm kind of a juice purist, myself. I like to throw around words like 'cold pressed', 'unpasteurized' and 'live enzymes'. My latest favorite concoctions come from the Marin County-based kitchens of Urban Remedy. The line was developed by a nutritionist with a background in Chinese Medicine, so not only do these elixirs contain the usual energy-boosting veggies and fruits, they're also loaded with therapeutic herbals like burdock and cardamom. As well, the sugar content of Urban Remedy is significantly lower than most others on the market.
Last week I signed on to do a 3-day juice cleanse. I'd completed a similar one last year and was raring to do it again. Full disclosure, this time around I only lasted 8 hours before I succumbed to the siren call of chewing. Cleansing is no joke; you have to be in the right frame of mind. But the best thing about juicing is that you can incorporate it into your usual routine and still reap the benefits! I've been enjoying the remaining juices from my cleanse as meal replacements when I'm on the go, and the lemonade with tumeric revives me like nobody's business after a Bikram yoga class. Fortunately the juices are available a la carte as well as in a detox kit, because I'm hooked!
P.S. Although I received complimentary product from Urban Remedy, all opinions here are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that keep The City Sage going!
