These days I have been concentrating on my writing, which doesn't leave much time for the styling projects I used to do so frequently. Every once and a while, though, I love to step away from the computer and flex my visual muscles—and I'm so grateful to have some incredibly talented colleagues who give me the opportunity to do so! Earlier this season I did a shoot with my pals at Woodnote Photography. The results have me feeling pretty energized!
If you've been around the blog for any length of time, you know my propensity to dive back in time for inspiration. As we were concepting I came across some images of Marilyn Monroe on a 1954 USO trip, in which she traveled to Korea to entertain the troops. Half of the photos from the tour feature the divine Ms. Monroe in full glamour mode whereas the rest depict her sporting army gear. She is at once exuberant yet enigmatic, and I wanted to evoke that contrast for our shoot.
At the same time, we didn't want the shoot to feel costume-y. So we mixed classic pin-up beauty (even in fatigues, Marilyn was never without a red lip!) with contemporary shapes in denim, khaki, linen, and silk. I don't know that hit the nail exactly on the head, inspiration wise, but I do know that I adore these photos. See more today on Glitter Guide and over at Woodnote Photography!
P.S. This shoot was the work of an incredible team! Hair by Heidi Marie Garrett, makeup by Amy Clarke. Our awesome model was Kylie Prusak of Ford Models LA. And a huge thanks to Individual Medley, Gypsy 05, Darling Clothes, and Hearts for lending us the pieces shown here.
