Whenever I go to a craft or hardware store, I wander the aisles gazing at the supplies and wondering, ‘What could I do with that?‘ From pipes, fasteners and fittings to yarn, beads, and paint, the possibilities for creativity seem endless. For me, wondering about those possibilities is as about far as I get. But Los Angeles maker Cindy Zell goes all the way to fashion one-of-a-kind sculptural fiber art that belongs as much in a gallery as it does in your home!
You may recognize shades of Cindy’s aesthetic from her other label WKNDLA, which offers jewelry, door knob tassels, and wall hangings. These larger installation pieces are like the mama and papa bears in her body of work and put her talent and vision in an even brighter spotlight. Cindy’s minimal aesthetic belies the labor that goes into every detail. Soldering, woodworking, rope-making, and indigo dying are just a few of the skills she keeps in her back pocket. Each piece is an investment to be sure, but who would need furniture or groceries when you could stare at one of Cindy’s creations all day?!
