Living in Los Angeles has changed my interiors style considerably. In San Francisco I couldn’t get enough of quirky midcentury, and in New York before that I ascribed to a faded Belle Epoque elegance. Now that my heart resides staunchly in Southern California I’m drawn to tones that suggest a juxtaposition of desert and sea, wide-open-nature and urban modernism, and above all, the ever-present energy of the sun. It’s a one-of-a-kind vibe that LA-based design firm DISC Interiors translates with aplomb in the studied serenity of their spaces.
DISC is the brainchild of David John Dick Krista Schrock, who bring backgrounds in styling and visual arts to their instantly recognizable residential, commercial, and product designs. From kitchens and baths to living and bedrooms, the two layer rich natural textures with subtle tonal hues to create spaces that quietly boast remarkable depth; a first glance suggests a light and effortless sensibility, but further inspection reveals that there’s a lot more going on than meets the eye—just like LA herself!
Much of the energy that hums beneath the surface of a DISC Interiors room stems from the influence of deftly applied pattern and print. Their work is a testament of the ability of globally-inspired stripes, graphics, and wovens to bring a room to life, and it’s illustrated especially beautifully in their textile collection for Smith & Noble. The DISC Interiors portfolio reads like a lesson in subtle, harmonious design—and it’s well worth studying up on!
