Book Review: Michael S Smith Kitchens and Baths

Of all the interior designers in the world, Michael S Smith is one of the most reknowned–not least because the Obamas asked him to re-do their digs when they moved to Pennslyvania Avenue. However Smith's fame was well established even before he landed that sweet presidential gig, and one look at his new book Kitchens and Baths a testimony to why; dude knows his stuff.

The book is a compendium of Smith's stunning and varied takes on those two rooms of the house most likely to induce sighs and swoons, fantasies and faints. As Smith himself puts it, 'These are the rooms where you should indulge yourself.' And this book definitely feels like a major indulgence!

Even if not every space is to your taste, Smith's prose and his explanation of his approach to each project is fascinating. I keep lingering over sentences like, 'We chose the hardware very carefully. In the kitchen, it's the equivalent of jewelry." How rare and wonderful it is to come across a design book that you want to read just as much as you want to enjoy the images!

And the ultimate? Last night Smith came to San Francisco for an event co-hosted by Ann Sacks and Baker Furniture, and he signed my book. I usually keep my cool around quote-unquote famous people, but I must admit: meeting Michael ruffled my feathers for sure. Do you see how wide my grin is in this picture, you guys? Jeez. Who'da thunk it?
