Pleasures of Summer: A Few Around-the-House Moments

Jered's california pottery ceramic coffee maker

It's only Tuesday and already this week is kicking my butt! We're polishing off the June issue of Rue, I'm on call for jury duty, and I have a zillion other irons in the fire. So I'm doing my best to focus on small moments throughout the day to keep me sane. This ceramic coffee percolater from Berkeley artisan Jered's Pottery is so pretty I haven't used it yet, but just looking at it makes me calm.

Cherries wood bowl

Here in California we're lucky to enjoy high quality produce year 'round, but of course nothing beats the fruits of summer. Cherries are my number one fave, and they're just starting to peak. I'd do anything for a taste of these guys (I may have been chased off a Swiss cherry farmer's property at the age of 13) so you can bet I'm going through them by the bowlful at the moment!

Soludos for j crew striped red espadrilles

I recently upgraded my cheapy $10 espadrilles and jumped on the Soludos bandwagon. Boy am I glad I did, because these things are comfy as all get-out! The striped ones from J. Crew put me in a cheerful mood every time I wear them (which is, like, 24/7) and I've stopped caring whether they match my outfit. Which is fine because you're looking at my office and my workwear right now.

Tell me: What small, special moments get you through a busy week?

  1. hmm. mostly, holding my best friend’s baby boy (not even 1 full day old yet!) last night, after a 10+ hour day at my desk job. everything else seems so distant when you’re holding such a new life in your hands. i also took a chance to escape the office for a few minutes today (no patients, and the doctor was out!) and it’s the perfect sunny 75 degree day here right now. i put all the windows down and just drove around town for a few minutes! nothing like a few moments of freedom to get you through the rest of the office afternoon!

  2. I hear you! Sometimes when life gets crazy a deep breath and a moment of peace takes me a long way. I notice a huge difference in my behaviour if I don’t take time out for myself, whether it’s a yoga class, a walk with the dogs or a trip to the coffee shop.

  3. Hey – That coffee thing looks really cool. How does it work!

  4. go buy yourself some flowers! it’ll get you out of the house for at least a few minutes and will brighten up your space. having flowers around the house always makes me feel better.

  5. We went strawberry picking on Saturday with a group of friends and a bunch of toddlers – it was an absolute blast! I am relatively certain the kiddos ended up with more berries in their tummies than in their baskets – but, that is the fun of it right?!
It is looking forward to simple family outings that get me through the week. Our two year old is a handful but experiencing new things and seeding the world through her eyes can put a smile on my face at even the most trying moments.

  6. Amidst a hectic week you deserves lot of loveliness! Cherries! Flowers! A nice long walk…enjoying the little things is key. 🙂

  7. Ah, I have these in blue stripes, and wear them all the time as well. I’d neglected them thus far this summer…thanks for the reminder!

  8. Today with the economy being what it is, none of us want to spend an arm and a leg in order to look stylish. Fortunately, we don’t have to. There are plenty of ways to look stylish without spending a fortune. As the Budget Fashionista says, “frugal is the new black.” Magazines aren’t always the best depiction of this.
