Pasta is the culinary equivalent of fairy dust. We can all agree on this, yes? There is no sour mood it cannot sweeten, no cracked relationship it cannot mend, no lonely heart it cannot soothe. But the rule only applies to fresh pasta, which isn't always easy to come by. So when I heard about the Weekend Pasta Project–a ready-made kit from my local Italian deli Salumeria–I was on it.

Tucked into a brown paper bag is everything you need. This weekend featured a tender hen ragu–not just chicken. Hen!–with itty bitty squashes that I got to julienne myself. Plus the pasta is carried across the street from Flour + Water, the best Italian restaurant in town. There was enough for two satisfying portions: in my case some for tonight, then for lunch tomorrow.

If you live in San Francisco or you're just visiting, you must pop into Salumeria. Pick up a bottle of wine and a Weekend Pasta Project, sit down for a prosciutto, pickle, and pretzel sandwich, or just gawk at how pretty the interior is. The odds that you'll find me doing the same are high. Oh and just in case you're wondering, this pasta has been taste-tested by my trusty assistants!

  1. Woah–what an awesome idea! I love fresh pasta more than anything (really!). I wish somewhere near me had pasta projects!
