Lately Loving: Handmade Ceramics from Suite One Studio

Ceramics inspiration

In elementary school, art class was the highlight of my week. I can still recall the smell of the studio, a mix of crayon wax and wood scraps, soggy paste and drying paint. From papier mache dioramas to unintentionally abstract self-portraits, I embraced it all. But the best assignments came when the teacher pulled out giant blocks of clay and portioned a lump to each student. Play with mud? In the name of creativity? Don't have to tell me twice!

Back then I never sculpted anything more sophisticated than a coiled pot or a pinched bowl—nor could I improve upon those early efforts today—but I remain fascinated by clay. I recently watched a professional ceramicist at her wheel and was in awe of the speed and grace with which a perfectly formed cup emerged from beneath her hands. The ability to transform humble blob of earth into a functional work of art feels near-miraculous to me.

When it comes to 'functional works of art', no one does 'em quite like Lindsay Emery of Suite One Studio. Her classic juicers and berry bowls feature clean lines and fresh hues that feel at home on the kitchen counter, while more complex shapes, imprints, and color washes display desserts or flowers with aplomb. All of Lindsay's designs would be absolutely perfect for last week's spring table settings, or pick up just one to evoke memories of art classes of yore!
