I've talked before about my goal to elevate my living room from functional to fab. In addition to spare, thoughtful accents of minimalist decor and modern lighting, my biggest addition will be artwork to adorn the currently (pathetically) bare walls. Art has the power to make or break a space—not only with the specific pieces you select but also with how you frame and hang them!
I've always thought of myself as a gallery wall girl and still love the look of myriad prints, paintings, and photos wending their way around a room. Lately, though, I'm also finding myself drawn to simpler and more striking displays that feature only a few large elements and lots of negative space. One or two sizable canvases, when chosen carefully, can make a stronger impact than a dozen smaller ones. The operative words of course are 'chosen carefully'; for someone like me who suffers from a serious case of decor ADD, narrowing down the many options is no easy task!
I have a feeling that there exists a happy medium between busy gallery wall and stark statement art, and I intend to find it. A handful of pieces in a mix of sizes and media, all united by a neutral palette, seems like a good place to start. Dynamic, unexpected arrangements like the examples above will move the eye around the room, and a few touches of humor will tickle the funny bone. Because the one rule to which I ascribe when it comes to art is that it should never be boring!
