I learned something about myself recently: I’m an expert at thinking myself out of fun. You see, I’ve always been a smart cookie. And while it’s certainly served me well, like any character trait it also has its downside. Ask me to spend a whole day with no to-do list, and I’ll balk at the uncertainty. Tell me to be spontaneous and I’ll offer you the etymology of the word. I’ve always simply assumed that I’m dull and pedantic, but I’m coming to realize that fun begins where planning ends.
I think a lot of us can relate to this feeling. We’re so busy, it only makes sense to structure every waking moment. How else will we get everything done? But the cost of our over-programmed existence is that every day can start to look the same—and worse, we start to doubt our own capacity for joy. I’m convinced, however, that it’s never too late to reverse the trend. I’m a big proponent of designing your environment to reflect and reinforce your life goals; it’s something you’ll hear me talk a lot more about in coming months as its the focus of my upcoming book Sage Living!
So if you’re a recovering fun-o-phobe like me, one of the best ways to bust your rut is to create a playful, lighthearted atmosphere—whatever that looks like for you. Maybe it’s whimsical touches that make you smile, like these seriously fun finds from the awesome British shop Howkapow! Or perhaps it’s pieces that remind you of the sunniest people in your life. Whatever you choose, just don’t think too hard about it. It’s only design, after all!

I agree wholeheartedly! Our place should be fun, not stuffy and uninspiring. So many cute details here! That succulent corner is just awesome.
