Stylish Workout Clothes to Rock Your New Year’s Fitness Goals

A true child of the 80’s, I have a longstanding appreciation for chic workout clothes. It began when I cut the toes from my dad’s socks, turned them into leg warmers, and paired them with the belted leotard I’d convinced my mother to buy me at Sears. I was confident that the complete getup would make my daily Mousercise workouts that much more effective. In college, I continued my love affair with activewear by scoring a job at lululemon and taking full advantage of the generous employee discount. And these days it thrills me to no end that ‘athleisure’ is now its own burgeoning retail category. Not only does it feel like the full-circle legitimization of my fashion sensibility, but there are more ways than ever for a spandex junkie like me to get her fix!

Of course the whole point of workout wear is to, um, wear it for your workout. And sometimes I truly do exactly that! My criteria are pretty strict: no pinching of waistbands or bulging of back flab, lots of versatility and tons of personality. I veer towards capri length leggings in a fun print, which I pair with solid sneaks and a supportive tank. It’s an outfit that goes from barre to yoga to spin to the grocery store with ease—and it’s so common in my wardrobe that my sweetie has actually banned me from buying more activewear. So won’t you please let me shop vicariously through you? The fresh fitness gear I admired all fall is on huge markdown, just in time for your New Year’s fitness goal setting. Workout wear this cute is the ultimate motivation for squeezing in an extra set of squats, with none of Dad’s socks injured in the process!
