How to Wear Summer’s Leopard Skirt for Fall

This summer Ivan and I were invited to a wedding that had the world’s most specific dress code. We were instructed to dress in the style of 1960’s Hong Kong, as both bride and groom not only grew up in that country but also adore the period film In the Mood for Love. Always one to follow directions, I immediately set out to craft an outfit that was true to the spirit and silhouettes of the era, but that was also something I’d be likely to wear again. It was a tall order, to say the least! After much searching and gnashing of teeth, I settled on a leopard skirt and blouse set that I figured I could wear as separates throughout the year. And sure enough, that’s exactly what I’ve been doing! The blouse is great with wide leg jeans or trousers, and the skirt is darling with a top strategically chosen to tone down the volume on the animal print. In fact, once you see how I’m wearing last summer’s leopard skirt for fall, I’m pretty sure you’ll agree with me that the most specific wedding dress code ever ended up being the best dress code ever!

It seemed like as soon as I got this skirt, I started seeing this and similar pieces pop up everywhere on my fave fashion blogs, so there’s been no shortage of inspiration for outfits to get maximum mileage out of it. My go-to combo generally involves an oversized top like this sweater hoodie, worn with an insouciant half-tuck to show off the skirt’s innovative tie waist. With the temperatures dropping even more, a menswear-inspired denim jacket thrown over the sweater adds even more casual flair!

For accessories, I’ve always loved a good sneaker/skirt combo, and a retro New Balance shoe is a fresh, sporty alternative to the Adidas sneaks I’ve been wearing into the ground the past while. A mini saddle bag in cognac leather not only picks up the warm hues present in the skirt, but also gives a nod to this year’s tiny purse trend (without looking as ridiculous as some of the teensy bags I’ve seen!). Tortoise sunglasses finish off a look that’s at once comfortable and right in step with the season. Clearly I should get invited to more theme weddings, right?!
