A Desert Adventure with GMC Yukon

Joshua tree

The desert has always had a special allure for me. Much like other wild locales—the ocean, the woods—the desert offers up a remarkable sense of calm, quiet, and peace. Out amongst the elements, beyond the wifi signal, you can't help but feel a sense of wonder at how small we humans are in the scheme of things. Yet even more than the beach or the forest, the desert humbles with its sweeping expanses. The earth and sky seem infinite.

So when GMC reached out to me and asked me to round up some friends for an adventure in the new 2015 Yukon, I knew immediately where I'd head! Joshua Tree National Park is only a two hour drive from my home in Los Angeles, but it might as well be on the moon. It promises everything you'd expect from a desert: isolated landscapes, bizarre plant life, a hint of danger (rattlesnakes! careful!), and if you're willing to stick around for them, the most breathtaking sunsets you'll ever see in your life.

So a few weeks ago, I hopped into a 2015 Yukon with Caroline and Jayden of Echo and Earl, as well as Jessica and Jonathan of Disregarden. We loaded the trunk with everything we'd need for a day of exploring. You wouldn't think five people could need so much stuff—I guess you can take the kids out of the city but not the city out of the kids!—but with the Yukon's generous cargo space there was still plenty of room for all us passengers to stretch out our legs during the drive to Joshua Tree.

On the way to our final destination we stopped to do a little exploring. After all, who can resist the call of those big rock formations? Even though we stayed on the roads—an important part of protecting desert habitat—some of them did become very narrow and sandy indeed. I was nervous at first as I've gotten cars stuck in desert sands before, but the Yukon handled them like a champ. Stay tuned for this afternoon when I'll be sharing more from our desert adventure, including that awe-inspiring sunset I promised!
