The casually draped hide is one of my favorite decor mainstays of recent years. (It's up there with the Moroccan wedding blanket). For adding texture and wintery warmth, it simply can't be beat. I think of it as the 21st century answer to the fur blankets under which Julie Christie burrows while she rides the sleigh in Dr. Zhivago. Whether you're gliding across the snow in 19th-century Russia or simply doing the Sunday Times crossword at home, you gotta keep warm!
Toss one on the floor, on the bed, on a chair; you kinda can't go wrong here. Don't be surprised if you catch yourself absent-mindedly petting the hide while you read or watch TV. Bonus? Hides are a hit with pets. When I was in high school, my family's cat Bill took ownership of a vintage fur coat that I found at Goodwill. I wanted to make pillows, with it but Bill had other ideas. And can we blame the fellow? Everyone needs a spot to snuggle down after a long day!
If a genuine hide isn't your thing—or if you're watching your wallet—there are plenty of faux options that don't scream synthetic too loudly. I'm partial to a cream hue myself, but I've seen some decent mink brown and silky otter greys too. When spring comes again, either store your fuzzy friend for the season or keep it in the mix. Plush is perennial, you guys!
