The July issue of Martha Stewart Living just landed in my mail box and I spent the morning lingering over it. My favorite feature? The decorating story brought to us from Wisconsin. A husband and wife team have overhauled Camp Wandawega, a 1940’s summer camp, and turned it into a northwoods resort that pays homage to the American tradition of tents and cabins, quilts and canoes.
Did you go to summer camp? I did! Specifically, I went to band camp, and it was the highlight of my adolescence. (My instrument was the flute…insert jokes here.) I have such fond memories of practicing Bach trios on placid lakeshores, scarfing grilled cheese and tomato soup in the mess hall, and having a crush on a different boy each day. I’d go back again in a heartbeat!
Since we can’t go back (and wouldn’t really want to, since I’m conveniently ignoring bugbites and post-camp blues) it’s wonderful to recreate the effect today at home. Look for simple, well-crafted basics that give you soul-deep satisfaction. Think canvas and tin, stripes and wovens, reds, greys, greens, and ecrus. Then make a fire in the backyard and stargaze ’til your heart’s content!

I feel ya, Anne. So hard to find a sense of balance- I feel like I’m always trying to catch up! Lately I’ve been trying to be more present wherever I’m at, to give myself more breaks (from the day & by not being so hard on myself) and let myself feel like a pile of lazy poop somedays, if that’s how I really feel.
