Did you catch last night’s lunar eclipse? The sky over my house was cloudy for almost the entire thing, and I was totally bummed as I’d really been looking forward to the event! I’m not much of an astronomy buff myself, but I do have deeply engrained memories of my dad pulling out his telescope for stargazing sessions when I was a kid. I always feel closer to him when I look at the night sky—especially on important astral occasions like an eclipse! That nostalgia was exactly the motivation behind the custom artwork that I recently commissioned from LA artist Kristine Claghorn (aka Claggie). Kristine does simple yet stunning watercolors of the moon, and the big one now hanging on my wall is a welcome daily reminder of my dad!
Claggie’s artwork is soft, ethereal, and utterly evocative of the mystery and romance of space. I can vividly recall a desert camping trip to see Haley’s Comet with my dad, and each of these paintings painting brings to mind the same magic of the nighttime landscape. With their muted palettes and blurry, indistinct lines, Claggie’s work would be perfect for creating a restful effect in the bedroom. Or with their playful depictions of grand subject matter, they’d set an imaginative tone in the nursery. Plus if the sky clouds over for the next eclipse, you’ll still have your very own moon to wish you sweet dreams each night!
