Get the Look: Eclectic Continental in the Netherlands

I'm going to run the risk of revealing my ignorance here, but it's worth it becauase you must see this house in THE NETHERLANDS. (I get confused whenever I have to talk about THE NETHERLANDS. Because I don't really know where THE NETHERLANDS are. And because stuff from THE NETHERLANDS is called Dutch. And what's Flemish? And where are The Lowlands? It's all bonkers!)

Now back to the matter at hand. We don't need to be able to point to THE NETHERLANDS on a map to be able to appreciate these stunning interiors. The homeowners stuck to a monochromatic palette of midnight, charcoal, and tin, punctuated with antiques that are both classical (turned wood stools, candlesticks) and global (salvaged from Dutch Africa perhaps? Now where was that?)

Throughout the space are industrial touches like modern typography and jointed lamps, and they juxtapose brilliantly against vignettes that feature Dutch Masters paintings and religious iconography. Yet for all the dark colors and relatively intense styling, there's an airiness about the place that has to do with the light streaming through the windows and the open weave linens strewn around.

The overall effect is one that doesn't take itself too seriously, in spite of the potential for doing so; check out that top photo, where the paintings are hung crookedly! Get the look by teaming up 19th-century inspired finds with pieces that look like you brought them back from the Boer War (what was that, anyway?) Just don't worry about looking stupid–there's no wrong answer!

  1. Love, love, loving this. We have been to the Netherlands several times {and yes, it is confusing. The people are Dutch and Flemish, but then there’s Amsterdam. Then there’s the Hague. And the country itself is Holland….} Regardless, it’s an amazing place to visit and this delightful post does it justice!

  4. It is pretty confusing, isn’t it? Just to clarify the first comment from Aleah and Nick. The country is officially the Netherlands (Nederland in Dutch). Holland is a region of the country, although confusingly many other languages use this officially to refer to the Netherlands. There are two provinces that comprise the region (not country) of Holland: Noord-Holland (North Holland, in which Amsterdam is located) and Zuid-Holland (South Holland, in which the Hague and Rotterdam are located). If you refer to the whole country as Holland, some people feel offended because it excludes other parts of the country. In English, we call the people that live in the Netherlands ‘Dutch’. Flemish refers to the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. Belgium is basically divided into two parts. The French-speaking part and the Dutch-speaking part. Although the way they speak Dutch is very different and is officially called Vlaams (Flemish, like the people). Phew. I hope that clarifies it! Greetings from Amsterdam.

    when people ask me where i’m coming from, the i said: Holland, (don’t make it to complicate, wether you live in the east or in the south of it) and the language is Dutch, just as our products.
