I’m writing this post from Toronto where my parents keep the ambient temperature of their house a toe-numbing 60 degrees. Given that I’m currently huddled under a down blanket with a hot water bottle, I think it’s safe to say that living in Southern California has made me soft indeed! Although I’m freezing here in my frosty hometown, I do love visiting as it affords the chance to hit the pavement for some winter style window shopping with my mom. Sure I’d have no use for the wooly stuff back in LA, but I still love to try on the coats, hats, gloves, and scarves that fill the Canadian boutiques this time of year!
While shades of black and grey will always be my go-to for layering, this year I’m finding myself increasingly drawn to the lighter side of things as well. Camel and its many neutral bedfellows, when worn together, make for a soft alternative to my usual charcoals, inks, and slates. Start with a pale overcoat as a foundation, then pile on shades of taupe, ivory, caramel and blush for a warm layered look—literally and figuratively speaking! Bonus points for mixing textures like suede and cashmere, boucle and silk. It’s exactly the sort of wintry sophistication that I’ll dream about when I’m back in LA wearing cutoffs on Christmas!
